DILG’s anti-smoking campaign gets DoH Red Orchid Award
THE Department of the Interior and Local Government XI was recently awarded the 2017 DOH Red Orchid Award for its substantial and inclusive efforts to implement a 100% Tobacco-Free Work Environment on December 14, 2017 held at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Palma Gil, Davao City.
The accolade, which is the highest award given by the Department of Health on the anti-smoking advocacy of local government units, government hospitals and offices and DOH centers nationwide, was conferred by the Department’s Davao Regional Office following the conduct of validation by the members of the validating team from the DOH.
The DILG-XI was adjudged based on a set of criteria using the World Health Organization MPOWER Initiative which denotes the six proven tobacco control policies: 1) Monitor tobacco use and prevention; 2) Protect people from the effects of tobacco smoke; 3) Offer help to quit tobacco use; 4) Warn about the dangers of tobacco; 5) Enforce ban on tobacco advertising and promotions; and 6) Raise taxes on tobacco.
The Red Orchid Award was duly received by Regional Director Alex C. Roldan, CESO V from DOH Asst. Secretary-Mindanao Cluster and Regional Director Dr. Abdullah B. Dumama, Jr. MD, MPA, CESO III.
