The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is vying for another Red Orchid Award (ROA), the highest distinction given by the Department of Health (DOH) on promoting smoke-free environment, for this year.

In 2013, DILG Regional Office was given the White Orchid Award for garnering a total score of 60-69% based on the set criteria and a Red Orchid Award in 2015 for having a 100% score.

The DOH Red Orchid Awards is an annual search for 100% Tobacco-Free Provinces, Municipalities, Cities, Government Offices, and DOH Centers for Health Development and DOH Hospitals. According to DOH, this desire of being 100% Tobacco-Free Environment is to fight off the illnesses and deaths that the tobacco industry has brought.

The winners are judged based on the strength of efforts in the implementation of a 100% Tobacco-Free Environment using the World Health Organization MPOWER (Monitor tobacco control policies; Protect people from tobacco smoke; Offer help to quit tobacco use; Warn against the dangers of tobacco; Enforce bans on tobacco advertising; and Raise taxes on tobacco) framework.

In the DILG Regional Office, smoke-free environment measures have been done such as providing counseling table for the smokers, posters regarding the effects of smoking to the body, and signages saying that the said workplace is 100% smoke-free are posted all over the office.

Aside from DILG, Civil Service Commission, Land Transportation Office, Department of Agriculture, Regional Philippine National Police, Department of Trade and Industry, and Southern Philippine Medical Center were also nominated from Davao City.
