Davao City took part in the celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) golden anniversary through the lighting of the ASEAN landmark lantern on August 8, 7 o’clock, in front of the City Hall.
The ASEAN lantern was lit in various parts of the Philippines as 76 local government units (LGUs) participated in the simultaneous event.
The rationale and brief history of ASEAN were presented by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) – XI Assistant Regional Director Wilhelm M. Suyko in his welcome message.
“The Landmark Lighting symbolizes ASEAN’s important role as the light guides the path of the ten ASEAN Member States in pursuit of regional peace and security, prosperity, and socio-cultural development,” Suyko said.
Dance groups from different schools in the city also presented several tribe dances and the University of Mindanao choir led the singing of the ASEAN country songs.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said in her speech that the city is honored to be one of the selected sites in the country to take part in the simultaneous landmark lighting ceremony.
“With the lighting of this lantern we join our fellow members of the ASEAN in celebrating 50 years of economic, political, social and cultural cooperation and we reaffirm our commitment to the association’s objectives and to the fundamental ASEAN principles of mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations,” Duterte stated.
The highlight of the activity which is the lighting of the landmark lantern was led by Mayor Duterte, Malaysian Consulate Representative Hon. Saiful Nizam Wahid, and Indonesian Consulate Consul General Berlian Napitupulu. It was then followed by a light show.
The said activity is one of the highlights of the Philippines’ Chairmanship of the ASEAN 2017.
